“Breastfeeding - from Pain to Pleasure
Getting the right help and advice from experts is always worth the money. This
is the conclusion I came to after seeing Mary Clare McCarthy, private lactation
consultant, based here in Wellington. My last breastfeeding experience was
anything but fun. As a first time mother with newborn twins I was determined to
give my babies the best start in life, but I was not prepared for the myriad of
problems I experienced....more"

"I remember asking a lot of questions
about breastfeeding soon after my son Cam was born but didn't get any resolution
and assumed it was just supposed to be that painful! After four weeks, I was
getting to the point that I was dreading each feed. I really wanted to continue
but didn't know if I could manage. Finally, at my husbands insistence (and after
a recommendation from my midwife) I contacted Mary Clare. She was able to come
around the following day and immediately identified and rectified a tongue-tie.
Once fixed, this gave immediate relief and after a second visit a week later I
am now confident to continue breastfeeding.
So my advice is even if you have asked questions and sort help but are not
satisfied with your breastfeeding, KEEP ASKING and seek further help. The sooner
it is resolved the better and I found Mary Clare to be excellent. Her experience
is invaluable in providing assistance. She also can provide other tips on
burping and different feeding positions etc."

"Hi Mary Clare,
I just wanted to let you know how well things are going and thank you for all
your help. Both girls are latching on with no problems and are basically fully
breastfed (apart from a small formula top up at night to help them sleep
through).
Thank you so much for all your help, it was well worth continuing as it is
really easy and quick to feed both girls at once now. Many thanks."

"As a second time mum, that had breastfed her first baby for 12 months, it was
assumed that I would have the breastfeeding thing sorted, so I was very
disappointed when I struggled to feed my second baby. It was suggested that I
contact Mary Clare to see if she could help me latch my wee girl on and get her
feeding. On our first appointment Mary-Clare found that our baby was tongue-tied
and that that was why she was not feeding well. After explaining to us what that
meant and how we could resolve it, Mary Clare gently sorted our baby out and
with some help and follow-up visits before we knew it we were feeding
successfully. If Mary-Clare had not come around to see us and then been there to
help and offer words of encouragement our girl would have been a bottle feed
baby and I would have missed the joy of being able to breastfeed her. I would,
and do, recommend Mary-Clare to anyone having troubles, she is the best."
