Lactation Consultant

A Lactation Consultant is a breastfeeding specialist qualified to prevent, recognise and resolve breastfeeding problems.

Why see a Lactation Consultant?

Before your baby is born you:
  • want to learn as much as possible about breastfeeding
  • had a previous difficult breastfeeding experience
  • are expecting twins or a baby who may be sick or premature
  • have had breast surgery and wonder if it will affect your breastfeeding
  • have inverted nipples
  • have personal health concerns which may impact on your breastfeeding
  • Adoptive breastfeeding - inducing milk production when you are not giving birth.

After your baby is born you:
  • and your baby are having difficulty breastfeeding
  • have painful breasts/nipples
  • are concerned how your baby is behaving before/after feeds
  • are concerned that you have too much/too little milk
  • and your baby are hospitalised

After your baby is born your:
  • baby is not gaining weight
  • baby may have a tongue-tie
  • midwife recommends you seek specialist support

As a Lactation Consultant I can:

  • visit you in your home by appointment Monday to Friday
  • explain what may have caused a problem
  • suggest choices to help you correct the problem
  • correct latch and positioning techniques at the breast
  • diagnose and treat infection
  • work with you to decide on a plan of care
  • suggest supplies or tools you can use
  • work alongside you to succeed
  • give you written instructions to follow
  • provide follow-up phone calls/visits as required to support your success
  • work co-operatively with your midwife and/or GP
  • consult other health providers as necessary

You can call me for follow-up support if:

  • a problem does not resolve
  • a different problem occurs
  • you find you cannot carry out the plan of care decided
  • you have questions

Because I am also a Registered Midwife I can also:
  • perform, or refer for, a 'frenotomy' to correct a diagnosed tongue-tie
  • prescribe medications in first six weeks following childbirth
